This Halloween I am proud to say I made my children's costumes. Oh sure that adorable, but not fancy, Tinkerbell costume took me 13 hrs, but I DID it! No pattern and out of scraps. Specifically cloth table napkins and a sheer curtain that had a stain of some sort on its corner. Brittney helped though and I don't think it would have gotten finished without her, not well anyway. The adorable three leaf sleeves were all her. Matthews Grim Reaper cloak only took 4 hours. On that one I bought the fabric on clearance and got the last two yards then found out the online pattern I had glanced at before called for an extra yard so had to finagle and then work around HIS issues (didn't like the hood hanging anywhere near his face), and it didn't get the care that Rachel's did, but still turned out fairly well I think. I had a good time making them though which is most of the point.
I also whipped up a starfish beanie baby for Matthew last night in thirty min. I had told him we could make one when he wanted me to buy one for five dollars at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (in Newport OR and worth a visit).
I like that I can create. Sure it isn't super good quality, sure others could do better, but I can still create and have fun doing it with my kids.
My Grandma Johnston is amazing with a sewing machine! I have always admired her for it. I remember one summer with tons of cousins running around and one bathroom, I didn't get my turn in time. Embarrassing as it was as I was six? eight? my grandma just sat down and whipped up a pair of pretty pink underwear for me to wear while mine were being washed. I had those underwear for many years after I outgrew them. I was just so impressed that she could make something so pretty so fast (and for just me lol).
She helped me make my first quilt when I was fifteen. She is also the one who introduced me to dream catchers and showed me how to make them. I have often wished I lived closer and could just stop by and say "Grandma, HELP! I cant figure out this pattern." or "now what do they mean by this?" or "how do I do this?".
