While I have been interested in crafty stuff most of my life, lately I have been hit by a craft bug. It started with a trip to the craft store and an impulse purchase of sewing glue. I made my own lizard pattern, found some scraps and glued me a lizard, which didn't stay glued so I had to stitch it around the seam on the outside. Then filled it with lentil beans. This fun guy went to Eric who didn't care that there was an extra seam over one leg where I widened the stuffing hole with scissors then sewed it back up totally crooked. That was the start. I recently found a small, mini, basic, sewing machine for only $30 ($10 off sale) that doesn't have to use a foot pedal and patterns were on sale for only $2 each.
I have discovered that for regular clothes, home sewing is NOT less expensive. The cost of fabric (even half off) plus buttons, bias, interfacing, elastic etc is equal if not more then the cost of a good Walmart or Target deal and that does not include the time and effort of making. It COULD however be cheaper to make accessories, quilts, costumes (got some neat patterns for those for kids) toys etc. plus using old fabric to create something new is FREE!
I have not sewn more then a rag doll as yet but washed one of my fabrics today so may get to that tomorrow. I also bead. Mostly jewelry. One drawback to creating is that I get so caught up in my project that I have a VERY hard time putting it down to go to bed. Poor husband is often awakened by my noisy climbing into bed (and it is quite the ordeal) in the wee hours of the morning. I am getting better at it and have started to limit how many nights I work on projects after kids are tucked into bed to limit the nights I will be tempted to stay up. This is kind of working....sorta.
Anywho, I have overspent on craft stuff this last month and am cutting myself off until I create my way through my stockpile of supplies. Got bunches to do with the kids too. Pictures should follow, though you have to keep your giggles about my flawed projects to yourself. I KNOW that a head is supposed to be round not mostly round with a flat spot but knowing and doing are two different things, and I am just learning and having fun.
